Casual Racism at Costco

Costco

I bought a few things in Costco on Sunday morning… in front of me in the que were 4 Korean women – all speaking mainly Korean but trying to communicate in English with the women serving them at the checkout.

They wanted to split the bill 4 ways (which I think in Costco is a bit of a nightmare… but do-able) – I mean I understood perfectly and I wasn’t really listening.

Anyway… they did their shopping… managed to pay for everything and then the two tellers then turned to serve me.

First thing they said was,

Good god, In England you are supposed to speak English… We should have refused to serve them like that guy in the post office

(EDIT: the guy in the post office got fired this morning)

I love Costco, think its a brilliant business model (15% markup regardless is an excellent strategy) and they sell some great products but this is not how to treat your customers. Milton Keynes is a new city made up of people from all over the UK and even the world, they bring with them their work ethic, businesses, employment, investment and diversity.

I was going to offer them our telephone interpreting service but assume it would have been wasted on the people that served me (or even better perhaps introduce them to my French wife who can swear like a sailor when she watches France losing at football).

Herb Kelleher said there was 50,000 ways to lose a customer each day and it will be a long time before me, my family and my business shop again at Costco.
